Reported 24 April 2026
Bellandur Lake continues to generate toxic foam (visible from Bengaluru International Airport) and has caught fire multiple times due to phosphate and nitrogen pollution from untreated sewage. NGT has issued remediation orders since 2015. As of 2026, the three STPs commissioned for the lake are operating at 40–60% capacity and the incoming sewage volume exceeds design capacity. A comprehensive catchment-area sewage audit and STP upgrade is needed.
