Reported 24 April 2026
An estimated 12 tonnes of plastic packaging from puja offerings is generated monthly on Nilachal hill (Kamakhya temple, Guwahati). The hill has no segregation infrastructure; mixed waste is sent to the Bharalumukh dump. A zero-waste-pilgrim initiative was proposed by Assam Tourism in 2024 but has not been piloted. Plastic-free alternatives for prasad packaging are commercially available.
